Ablative VS. Non-Ablative Skin Resurfacing

With Ablative lasers, the tissue of the epidermis is burned away. A healing process in which new skin grows follows this. Ablative lasers are safe and quite effective for treating a variety of skin problems. However, the procedure requires healing time of up to 6 weeks. Doctors recommend great care  be taken to prevent infection. A relatively new method uses fractional lasers. Fractional lasers target tiny areas of the skin, meaning less of the overall skin is affected.


In contrast, non-ablative skin resurfacing is less servere procedure. This technique treats the skin tissue in the dermis, bllow the epidermis. Therefore, non-ablative resurfacing does not damage the epidermis. This also means that patients who undergo non-ablativeresurfacing don't requireas much time to recuperate. Moreover, the process is less painful than treatments using ablative lasers.


One common non-ablative technique is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). The beam of an ablative laser uses a single wavelength. IPL employs a broader beam using hundreds or thousands of wavelenths. While IPL uses the sae principles as a laser, it is technically not a laser treatment.


There are pros and cons to each type of procedure. For women who insist that their treatments be minimally painful, non-ablative treatments are preferred. They also requires much less healing time. However, they are not as effective in dealing with various skin conditions as ablative lasers. Non-ablative procedures also require more treatments than ablative. It is best to consult with your dermatologist or other skin care expert before making a final decison.
